On May 2, 1929 - 85 years ago - Lady Heath visited
St Louis and sent her best wishes to the organisers of the first ever
St Louis Aircraft Show. This was due to take place from May 25 to
June 1 as part of St Louis Aviation Week. The American Society of
Mechanical Engineers would hold their annual conference and the dare
devils of flight would take to the air for the Gardner Cup race, with
$10,000 going to the winner – all very exciting stuff.
This year on May 3-5, a revived Spirit Of St Louis Airshow will help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Spirit of St Louis Airport in Chesterfield. Headlining the programme is the US Navy's Blue Angels display team, and our friend Walt Peterson, who is steeped in the history of St Louis aviation, is hoping the Blue Angels might remember the role of women in aviation by dipping their wings in salute to Mary Heath, or by honouring her in some way over the weekend.Good news is that women pilots are taking a prominent role in the airshow and other related activities.
